Final season of Game of Thrones is round the corner and it’s time that you brush up your high Valyrian language skills. Duolingo, popular language learning app will soon offer a course for learning the fictional language of mother of Dragons. The course will feature learning phrases like “Varys zaldrīzerme Dovaogēdī majaqsa” (“Varys admires the indestructible Unsullied”), and the famous one, “Valar morghulis” (“All men must die”).
Course is created by David J. Peterson who was responsible for brining the language to life for Game of Thrones. Peterson also invented the Dothraki language for the show. He created the language mostly from scratch constructing the grammar around the two key phrases used in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books: “Valar Morghulis” (“All men must die”) and “Valar Dohaeris” (“All men must serve”). Interestingly, he is also currently teaching a course titled, “The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention.” The goal of the class was to help students build their own creative ways of communicating.
The update of Duolingo which will introduce the course, is accompanied by a message from David which reads “Valyrio Māzis,” which translates to mean “Valyrian is coming.” The program will be in beta and available to try on the web interface first, beginning July 13, and will be integrated into iOS and Android apps later.
