A major spike in tourism to Puerto Rico has been attributed to the success of the Luis Fonsi hit song “Despacito.”
Tourism to the Caribbean island has increased by almost 50 percent this year as the popular remix featuring Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber continues to dominate the charts.
“We know popular culture has a strong influence on our travel decisions,” Isabelle Pinson, Vice President at Hotels.com told Daily Star reporters. “As Puerto Rico is the home of singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, and gets a big shout out in their hit song, it seems to be encouraging more people to explore this great destination.”
“Despacito” became the first Latino song to take first place on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart since the “Macarena” in 1996. Outside the United States, the song has also become an international hit, topping charts in 45 countries across the globe.
The music video for the song has received more than 2.4 billion views and was shot in the nation’s colorful historic districts, La Pena and San Juan.
“What a joy it is to read this in international media. Puerto Rico is the true protagonist of this song and this video. It was always my great inspiration,” the composer and native Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonti said via his Instagram account.
